HEPATITIS B "RECOMBIVAX HB" FACTS

The Hepatitis B "RECOMBIVAX HB" is made by the vaccine manufacturing Merck. This vaccine is intended for all ages Birth - 19 years of age

(3 doses are recommended). Initial U.S approval: 1983. 


SYMPTOMS OF HEPATITIS B:

Signs and symptoms of hepatitis B range from mild to severe, and some individuals have no symptoms at all. Hepatitis B signs and symptoms may include: Abdominal pain, Dark urine, Fever, Joint pain, Loss of appetite, Nausea and vomiting, Weakness and fatigue, Jaundice (yellow skin, white eyes)


TRANSMISSION:

1. Sex with an infected partner

2. Injection drug use that involves sharing needles, syringes, or drug-preparation equipment

3. Birth to an infected mother

4. Contact with blood or open sores of an infected person

5. Needle sticks or sharp instrument exposures

6. Sharing items such as razors or toothbrushes with an infected person

** HBV is not spread through food or water, sharing eating utensils, breastfeeding, hugging, kissing, hand holding, coughing, or sneezing.


INGREDIENTS:

1. Soy Peptone - (SOYBEAN MEAL)

2. Dextrose - (GLUCOSE)

3. Amino Acids - (CARBON, HYDROGEN, OXYGEN, NITROGEN)

4. Mineral Salts - (TABLE SALT)

5. Phosphate Buffer - (SODIUM CHLORIDE)

6. Formaldehyde - (GAS)

7. Potassium Aluminum Sulfate - (POTASSIUM, ALUMINUM, KAl (SO4)

8. Amorphous Aluminum - (ALUMINUM)

9. Hydroxyphosphate Sulfate - (ALUMINUM PHOSPHATE)

10. Yeast Protein - (FUNGUS)


YOU SHOULD NOT GET THIS VACCINATION IF:

1. It is also not known whether this vaccine can cause fetal harm to a pregnant woman or reproduction capacity.

2. Nursing Mothers It is not known whether the vaccine is excreted in human milk.

3. The safety and effectiveness of RECOMBIVAX HB Dialysis Formulation in children have not been established.

4. 65 years of age and older 


CONTRAINDICATIONS:

1. Do not administer RECOMBIVAX HB to individuals with a history of severe allergic or hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) after a previous dose of any hepatitis B-containing vaccine or to any component of RECOMBIVAX HB, including yeast


WARNING:

1. The DURATION of the protective effect of RECOMBIVAX HB is unknown at present and the need for booster doses is not yet defined.

2. Hypersensitivity to Latex may cause allergic reactions in latex-sensitive individuals.

3. Apnea in Premature Infants

4. Infants Weighing Less Than 4.4 pounds should be delayed until 1 month of age or hospital discharge in infants weighing 4.4 pounds

5. Appropriate medical treatment/supervision must be available to manage possible anaphylactic reactions following administration

5. RECOMBIVAX HB MAY NOT PREVENT hepatitis B infection. Additionally, vaccination with RECOMBIVAX HB MAY NOT PROTECT all individuals

7. RECOMBIVAX HB has not been evaluated for carcinogenic (CANCER), mutagenic potential (DNA MUTATION), or potential to impair fertility (INFERTILITY)
